Standard Grade Biology Homework Policy
- Weekly Assessed Formal Exercise for all pupils based on applying knowledge relevant to the most recently completed topic. The exercises are taken from the Standard Grade Biology textbook. These exercises can vary in length, but will usually take a minimum of 25 minutes.
- Regular revision of notes (textbook and jotter) is issued and assessed with starter questions in order to improve knowledge and understanding of the course.
- Booklets of past paper questions based on each topic and booklets of problem solving questions are issued to pupils in preparation for Unit tests and prelim exams.
A variety of marking techniques are used to ensure we have a marks profile for monitoring progress and Aifl/collaborative learning techniques are used to deepen understanding of exam technique and marking standards for the exam. Feedback and evaluation are integral to this process.
- All homework is recorded in course plans and displayed on dedicated “Homework Whiteboard” in class.
Intermediate 1 – Biology Homework Policy
Fortnightly Assessed Formal Exercise for all pupils based on applying knowledge relevant to the most recently completed topic. The exercises are taken from the JOAT Intermediate 1 Biology Interactive Pack as textbooks are used in class only. These exercises can vary in length, but will usually take minimum of 20 minutes.
- Due to the amount of time available for in class learning, revision and consolidation, there is not the same need as in Standard Grade to issue learning tasks in S3. However, in S4 learning tasks are introduced in preparation for the prelim.
- Consolidation booklets, past paper booklets and memory cards are all used to improve learning.
- A variety of marking techniques are used to ensure we have a marks profile for monitoring progress and Aifl/collaborative learning techniques are used to deepen learning, understanding of exam technique and marking standards for the exam. Feedback, reward, praise and evaluation are integral to this process.
- All homework is recorded in teacher planner and displayed on dedicated “Homework Whiteboard” in class.
Higher Biology Homework Policy
- Weekly Assessed Formal Exercise for all pupils based on applying knowledge relevant to the most recently completed topic. This can vary in length, but is usually a minimum of 45 minutes and a maximum of 90 minutes of work.
- In addition pupils finish off questions from their textbooks to consolidate KU several nights per week – usually 2 x 10-15 minutes of work.
- Regular learning homework is also issued and assessed with starter questions.
- Booklets of past paper questions based on each unit, booklets of data interpretations, booklets of experimental questions and regular essay practice questions are also issued regularly in addition to the weekly exercise.
- A variety of marking techniques are used to ensure we have a marks profile for monitoring progress and Aifl/collaborative learning techniques are used to deepen understanding of exam technique and marking standards for the exam. Feedback and evaluation are integral to this process.
